I am a historian of economic, legal, and political ideas and institutions. I focus primarily on the early modern period (c. 1450–c. 1800) in Europe, where the influence of ancient thought is impossible to overstate.
Personal Statement
My work focuses on making connections over long time horizons and across expansive geographies. I hold a PhD from Harvard University, where I studied the development of Roman law (especially property) in antiquity; I chose this subject with the intention of uncovering how its complicated formation has impacted its later history, especially since the early 16th century. I have held postdoctoral positions at Duke University and at Harvard, and am now Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics and an affiliated member of the Department of Economics at the University of Miami.
